CUBALIBRE ORIGIN AND REAL RECIPE

Undoubtedly, the cubalibre is one of the best known cocktails in the world and also one of the most consumed. Do you know the recipe and origin of the cubalibre?

There are several unofficial versions about the recipe and origin of cubalibre. The first and most widespread is the one born during the second war of Cuban independence, between 1895 and 1898.

It is said that during this war, American soldiers celebrated the victory over the Spanish army with their Cuban compatriots. During these celebrations, one soldier came up with the idea of mixing rum, a classic Cuban drink, with Coca-Cola, the iconic American beverage.

Thus, the cubalibre was born, as a symbol of the union of both countries and of Cuban independence from the Spanish crown.

However, there are several less “romantic” versions of the recipe and origin of the cubalibre.

The theory of the accidental!

Another possibility, although less poetic, is the story of the accidental cubalibre. It is said that an unknown customer was in a bar drinking a daiquiri, and found his too dry, so he asked the bartender to reduce it. The bartender, following his client's orders, decided to dilute it with Coca Cola, and unknowingly created one of the most important cocktails in history.

The political value of the cubalibre.

Today the cubalibre no longer represents the symbol of the alliance between the United States and Cuba, but rather the opposite. Until very recently, Cubalibre was prepared on the Cuban island exclusively with Pepsi-cola, since Coca-cola was considered a symbol of American imperialism.

Undoubtedly, we are in front of a cocktail that has a fascinating history, and although we do not know the true version of its history, its fables will continue to live and grow.
