COCKTAIL DECORATIONS

Have you ever tasted a drink that is so beautiful that you hesitate to take the first sip? When you want to live a full experience you not only delight your palate, but you also want the cocktail to conquer your eyes. But...there is a but and I'm going to reveal to you what the main function of cocktail garnishes is. Read on!

Aesthetics is not everything

The main function of the garnish in cocktails is to provide the aroma that will define the flavor. Smell contributes significantly to our sensory experience. Although many people tend to associate flavor solely with the taste buds.

The truth is that much of what we consider “taste” comes from smell. When you eat or drink something, aromatic molecules are released and travel to the nose, where they come into contact with the olfactory epithelium, a thin layer of cells specialized in detecting aromatic molecules.

This explains why a cold can lead to an impoverished taste experience. Smell and taste work together to help us enjoy the complexity and variety of flavors in foods and beverages.

You can make yourself an experiment by creating three of the same cocktail, a Mojito for example: one you can drink without decoration, another one you can add some mint leaves and the other one a lime peel.

The first one will be like watching a movie without the ending, the second one will have a strong balsamic aroma and the last one will seem more acidic on the palate... if you don't have a cold. After you have tried it you can leave us a comment with what you thought.

Less is more: Cocktail Decoration

It is advisable not to overdo the amount of decoration in cocktails. First of all, a less loaded presentation avoids visual distractions, allowing the customer to focus on the complexity of the mix and highlighting the quality of the key components.

Also, fewer garnishes simplify preparation, speeding up service and improving efficiency at the bar. You can then offer a more balanced experience, where each element contributes harmoniously to the enjoyment of the drink.

For a functional presentation in terms of time, taste and aesthetics, I recommend using up to two types of garnishes to make your creations appear elegant.

Visual contrasts and sensory coherence

Visual contrasts in cocktail decoration play a crucial role in positive perception and liking, as they attract attention and create an immediate visual impact.

By presenting ingredients of different colors and textures, the senses are stimulated even before tasting the drink, generating anticipation and excitement. In addition, the variation of color and texture in visual decoration can also reflect the diversity of ingredients used.

That said, obvious but not taken for granted, cocktail garnishes should be in keeping with the ingredients used in the mix and not just by color. This is how a bartender demonstrates his personal and innovative imprint by turning a cocktail into an authentic experience that goes beyond simple drinking.

Cocktail decoration elevates your drinks to another level. From the simple to the extravagant, these small additions make your cocktails worthy of a magazine cover.
